So you want to act, but are you ready to impress in the audition room? Here are 12 common-sense tips to help you ace your auditions and leave a lasting impression.

1. Be Polite Everywhere

Don't be rude and indignant in the lobby only to become charming and friendly in the audition room. They will hear about your bad behavior. Trust me, they talk.

2. Respect the Schedule

Don’t demand to go first because you have another audition and then linger talking to another actor for 40 minutes. Respect everyone's time.

3. Be Over-Prepared

Come in over-prepared. Don’t waste the casting director’s time saying you didn’t get the sides beforehand. If you really didn’t get the sides, arrive early, ask for them, and request to go at the end of the call.

4. Focus on the Moment

Be in the moment. Make the audition about them, not you. You are there to do your job, not to beg for theirs. Go in, have fun, and be the life of the audition. Make them want to call you back.

5. Know the Address

Don’t complain about getting the address wrong. Whether it was 500 North Wilshire or 500 South Wilshire, it’s your responsibility to figure it out and arrive early. That’s not their problem.

6. Dress the Part

Don’t come to an audition looking like you just rolled out of bed, especially if you’re auditioning for a professional role. Your attire is just as important as your dialogue. Be prepared.

7. Use Recent Photos

Don’t bring a ten-year-old picture to represent yourself. It’s misleading and unprofessional. Use a current headshot.

8. Be Honest on Your Resume

Don’t lie on your resume. If you haven’t worked with someone famous, don’t pretend you have. There’s no shame in having a small resume. Many directors appreciate honesty and a fresh face.

9. Show Professionalism

Talent and good looks aren’t always enough. Casting directors look for people who show up on time, are prepared, and work well with others.

10. Don’t Exaggerate Skills

If you list special skills on your resume, make sure you actually have them. You will get called out if you’re faking it.

11. Stay Sober

Never go to an audition under the influence. They will know, and it won’t end well for you.

12. Keep It Professional

Do not hit on the casting director, the assistant, the cameraperson, the receptionist, or the janitor. They will “accidentally” delete your footage on purpose.

Follow these tips, and you’ll be brought back for many auditions. Who knows? You might even book every time you come in. Good luck, and break a leg!
